Nine people, including three children, died on Saturday due to destructive floods and heavy rains that have been lashing several Yemeni governorates for three consecutive days.
Widespread Damage Across Governorates
- Aden: Floods inundated both major and side streets, raising concerns about rising water levels and damage to residential areas, exacerbated by fragile infrastructure and weak drainage systems.
- Lahij: Floodwaters swept across agricultural lands and destroyed the vital Al-Anad Bridge connecting Aden and Sanaa, completely halting traffic. Other main streets were also submerged, bringing traffic to a standstill.
- Shabwah: On Friday, two people drowned after being swept away by floods in the Um Uthaym area of the Assilan district. Last Wednesday, two children also drowned while swimming in a pond in the Al-Jadfarah area of the Bayhan district.
- Hadramout: A young man drowned in a deep pond left by the floods in the Al-Suwayri area of the Tarim district. Heavy rains also caused damage in various other parts of the governorate.
- Hodeidah: A young man drowned in the Al-Qati’ area of rural Tihama on Saturday.
- Hajjah: In the northern part of the country, three children died and their parents were injured when their home collapsed due to rain in the Sawakh area of the K’aidinah district.
- Sanaa: In the capital, which is under Houthi control, two houses in the Old City of Sanaa collapsed, displacing four families who lived there.
The meteorological authority has warned of the continued impact of the low-pressure system accompanied by thunderstorms on the southern and eastern coasts. It urged citizens to avoid valleys and low-lying areas to ensure their safety.
