Socotra: Rising Fuel Prices Spark Public Outrage and Expose UAE Companies’ Dominance

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
Socotra governorate is witnessing a sharp increase in fuel prices, with the cost of 20 liters of gasoline or diesel reaching 48,000 Yemeni riyals at the UAE-affiliated Al-Muthalath Al-Sharqi station.
The situation has provoked widespread anger among activists, who argue that residents can no longer bear the worsening conditions. They are calling for urgent intervention by authorities to protect citizens from exploitation by Emirati companies.
Activists pointed specifically to ADNOC and Al-Muthalath Al-Sharqi companies, accusing them of humiliating the population by forcing Socotris to work hard just to afford gas and electricity bills.
More than 150,000 people live in Socotra under significant economic pressure, as local investors are prevented from opening gas and oil stations.
Activists also criticized the governor and local authorities for obstructing the efforts of local investors, thereby reinforcing the dominance of Emirati companies in the local market.
