Yemeni-British Talks on Arrangements for New York Conference to Support Economic Reforms

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Yemeni Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Dr. Shaea Mohsen Al-Zandani held talks on Wednesday with the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Yemen, Abda Sharif, on ongoing preparations for an international conference to support the Yemeni government, scheduled to be held in New York next October.

During a virtual meeting, the two sides reviewed the joint arrangements between the Yemeni government and the United Kingdom to organize the New York conference, which aims to mobilize support from regional and international partners for the Yemeni government’s vision and priorities under its economic recovery plan.

The discussions also addressed developments arising from what the Yemeni government described as Iranian violations of Yemen’s sovereignty through the operation of flights to Sana’a Airport, which is under Houthi control, as well as the government’s measures to deter what it considers this threat. The two sides also discussed Houthi attacks targeting Saudi territory, their implications for national and regional security, and their direct threats to international maritime navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

Al-Zandani praised the United Kingdom’s support for Yemen’s internationally recognized government and its condemnation of Houthi violations and escalation at the United Nations Security Council. He stressed that the government would respond firmly to any new violations and would take all lawful measures to protect Yemen’s airspace and ports of entry in accordance with the constitution and international law.

The meeting also covered the economic, financial, and administrative reforms being implemented by the government to improve basic services and strengthen institutional efficiency. Al-Zandani noted that the success of these reforms requires continued international support, with British assistance playing a leading role.

For her part, Ambassador Abda Sharif reaffirmed her country’s commitment to continuing its support for the Yemeni government and its reform efforts to enhance the country’s economic and institutional stability.
