UKMTO: Suspicious Approach Off Yemen’s Socotra Island Repelled

Yemen Monitor/ Newsroom:
An onboard armed security team successfully repelled a suspicious maritime approach targeting a commercial oil tanker in the waters north of Yemen’s Socotra Island today.
According to an official security warning issued by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency, the incident occurred approximately 98 nautical miles (181 kilometers) north of the Yemeni island Socotra.
The Company Security Officer (CSO) of the targeted commercial vessel confirmed that a small, unidentified craft carrying five individuals had initiated a rapid and direct approach toward the tanker. Recognizing the immediate threat, the tanker’s onboard Armed Security Team intervened by firing a series of warning shots directly toward the oncoming boat.
The defensive action proved effective, forcing the occupants of the small craft to alter their course and move away from the commercial ship. UKMTO confirmed that the vessel and its crew are safe, and that relevant maritime authorities have launched a formal investigation into the encounter. No information regarding the identity or intent of the individuals on board the small craft has been released.
This incident comes amid heightened regional tensions and a volatile maritime security environment in West Asian waterways. UKMTO continues to assess threat levels as dangerously high, citing persistent risks of armed approaches, piracy, and electronic disruptions to satellite navigation systems.
Vessels transiting the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, and adjacent shipping lanes are being strongly advised by international maritime bodies to exercise extreme caution, maintain heightened vigilance, and immediately report any further suspicious activities.
