UN: Marib Receives Over 5,400 Displaced Fleeing “STC” Escalation, Amid Aid Shortages

Yemen Monitor / Marib / Exclusive:

The UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council’s (STC) takeover of Wadi Hadramawt in eastern Yemen, particularly in the city of Seiyun, has triggered a new wave of displacement toward Marib Governorate, involving thousands of civilians. This comes amid international warnings that humanitarian organizations are struggling to meet rising needs due to depleted resources.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) confirmed in a report published on Wednesday that hostilities in Seiyun since early December 2025 have displaced more than 5,418 individuals (approximately 774 families) towards Marib Governorate.

In its report, reviewed by Yemen Monitor, OCHA stated that the displaced families, most of whom originally hail from northern governorates, have been distributed across more than 24 displacement sites in Marib City and Al-Wadi District.

Field reports indicate that displacement movements are ongoing. It is noted that many families are awaiting confirmation from relatives in Marib before beginning their journey, despite the main road linking the two governorates remaining open with no reported obstacles to civilian or commercial vehicle movement.

Relief organizations in Marib are facing immense pressure to provide urgent aid to new arrivals, with the Rapid Response Mechanism activated to distribute shelter kits and hygiene supplies. However, UN agencies have warned that humanitarian stocks in Marib have reached critically low levels, threatening the ability to sustain the response if the influx of displaced persons continues.

On the health front, mobile medical teams have been dispatched to Marib Al-Wadi to provide consultations and medicine, particularly in remote areas hosting new arrivals. Meanwhile, protection teams are working to provide psychological and legal support to families affected by the conflict.

The report also noted that the logistical situation in Wadi Hadramawt has been impacted by the sudden closure of Seiyun International Airport, forcing flight diversions to Riyan Airport in Mukalla—a move that has exacerbated the suffering of travelers and patients.
