Yemeni President: STC Escalation Has Led to Suspension of IMF Activities

Yemen Monitor/ Newsroom:

Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council chairman Rashad al-Alimi said Thursday that the recent security and military tensions triggered by the Southern Transitional Council (STC) in Hadramawt and al-Mahra have begun to negatively impact Yemen’s economic situation, noting that the International Monetary Fund has suspended several vital programs as a result of the escalation.

Speaking in two phone calls with the governors of the two provinces, al-Alimi urged political, social, and tribal actors to support the state and local authorities in fulfilling their responsibilities toward citizens, preserving security and stability, and containing the fallout of heightened tensions.

According to the state-run news agency, al-Alimi stressed the need for the withdrawal of forces deployed from outside Hadramawt and al-Mahra, and for enabling local authorities to manage security and public services in accordance with the constitution and the law.

He also called for a comprehensive investigation into violations that accompanied the STC’s unilateral measures—including arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and assaults on public and private property—emphasizing the need for accountability and an end to impunity.

Al-Alimi warned against any further escalatory actions that could fuel additional violence and worsen the already dire economic and humanitarian crisis, stressing that efforts must remain focused on confronting the Houthis, who are designated on international terrorism lists, and on fulfilling Yemenis’ aspirations for security and peace.

He also praised ongoing Saudi efforts to de-escalate tensions and support stability in Hadramawt and al-Mahra, affirming the government’s backing for these initiatives and its commitment to strengthening the role of local authorities in safeguarding social peace and serving citizens.

The president urged all parties to prioritize the public interest over political disputes, preserve the progress achieved in recent years, and concentrate on the main battle against the Houthis and allied groups. He also highlighted the importance of restoring trust with regional and international partners, chiefly the Arab Coalition and the Gulf Cooperation Council.

The agency quoted an official source in the Presidency as saying that al-Alimi stressed the need to restore normalcy in Hadramawt and al-Mahra, uphold the foundations of the transitional phase, and enable the government and local authorities to carry out their duties—warning that the current living conditions do not allow for the opening of additional internal fronts.
