Yemeni Government Signs Two New Agreements to Boost Water Services in Marib and Abyan

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

In a new step to strengthen water projects in areas liberated from Houthi control, Yemen’s Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, signed two agreements today with the organization Muslim Hands to implement two vital projects targeting Marib and Abyan governorates.

The first project involves constructing an internal water network stretching 2.7 kilometers in the Al-Sahan neighborhood of Marib City. The project includes control chambers, valves, and a modern vertical pump with a production capacity of 15 liters per second to supply the University and Palace areas. The project is expected to benefit around 16,000 people, including displaced families and host communities, over a ten-month implementation period.

The second project focuses on rehabilitating the “Amrosh 2” well in the Lawdar district of Abyan Governorate and operating it using solar energy. It will also be connected to the public electricity grid and include the establishment of a main water distribution network, benefiting approximately 13,000 residents in the area.

Minister Al-Sharjabi affirmed that these projects are part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to improve water infrastructure and strengthen community resilience in the face of environmental and humanitarian challenges.

He noted that cooperation with Muslim Hands has resulted in a number of successful initiatives that have improved access to safe water and enhanced health and living conditions across several governorates.

For his part, the Director of Muslim Hands Yemen Office stated that the signing of the two agreements comes as part of an ongoing partnership with the Ministry of Water and Environment aimed at implementing sustainable development projects that improve quality of life and essential services in the most vulnerable areas.
