Yemeni Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Shaea Al-Zandani, met on Monday with U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, Steven Fagin, to discuss bilateral relations and the latest developments in the Yemeni arena.
The two sides discussed U.S. measures to classify the Houthis as a terrorist group, considering it an important step to weaken their hostile activities that threaten Yemen’s security, regional stability, and international navigation. They stressed the importance of continued coordination to confront these shared challenges.
Minister Al-Zandani reviewed government efforts to implement economic reforms, stabilize the national currency, and prepare for the upcoming Economic Conference in the interim capital, Aden, describing it as a crucial milestone to support recovery and attract investment.
He also underscored the gravity of violations committed by the Houthi militia against international organizations, including the ongoing detention of UN employees and the storming of their offices in Sana’a. He affirmed that such practices constitute a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and turn areas under Houthi control into unsafe environments that obstruct humanitarian work. He called for the relocation of UN offices to Aden to ensure the safety and independence of their operations.
For his part, the U.S. Ambassador reaffirmed his country’s support for the Yemeni government, praised its reform and recovery efforts, and stressed Washington’s commitment to supporting peace initiatives and alleviating the humanitarian suffering of the Yemeni people.
