Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh, son of the former Yemeni president and deputy head of the General People’s Congress (GPC) party in Sanaa, launched a fierce attack on the Houthi armed group, which has been pursuing members of the party. He described the Houthis as “a passing summer cloud, a gloom that will disperse.”
In his speech marking the anniversary of the party’s founding—published Saturday and reviewed by Yemen Monitor—Saleh said: “The brutal and unjustified campaign targeting the GPC, its heroic leadership, and its members, through arbitrary arrests and an unprecedented wave of incitement by the Houthi militia, is unacceptable.”
He added: “Two decades of successive events have proven that the Houthi militia does not believe in national partnership, dialogue, pluralism, or democracy.”
Saleh strongly condemned “the unjust arrests of Secretary-General Ghazi Ahmed Ali Mohsen, his office director, and his companions, as well as the systematic media campaign targeting the GPC, its leadership, and members.”
Party leaders and members have been subjected to persecution in Sanaa and other governorates, amid Houthi accusations that Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh and the GPC are preparing a coup against the group with foreign backing.
Saleh stressed: “We affirm to everyone our steadfast stance in rejecting all intimidation campaigns or arrests against our loyal cadres, and we categorically reject any interference in the internal affairs of our pioneering party by anyone.”
Sources told Yemen Monitor that the Houthis have been pressuring the GPC leadership to dismiss Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh from his position as deputy head of the party, after issuing a death sentence against him on charges of treason.
Saleh warned: “These Houthi measures undermine all peace efforts carried out by the UN envoy to Yemen, as well as by our brothers and friends.”
He concluded his address to party members by saying: “We affirm that we are with you and by your side in both hardship and ease. This is nothing but a passing summer cloud, a gloom that will disperse. You are with the truth, and the truth is with you. We urge you to remain patient and steadfast in your positions, as you have always done. After patience comes relief, and after night comes the dawn.”
