The United States announced on Sunday that it has signed a five-year assistance agreement with the Yemeni government to accelerate economic growth in Yemen.
The US Embassy in Yemen stated in a statement that “Yemeni Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Wadi Abdul Abdullah signed a five-year assistance agreement with the regional director of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in Yemen, Kimberly Bell.”
The statement indicated that “the agreement outlines how the development assistance provided by USAID will work to accelerate economic growth in Yemen and improve access to water, health, basic education services, and enhance governance and reconciliation.”
The statement further noted that “the USAID has provided over $5.8 billion in humanitarian and development assistance to support the Yemeni people since 2015.”
The statement also mentioned that “this agreement reflects the United States’ steadfast commitment to the prosperity and stability of Yemen and its people,” without mentioning the cost of the agreement.
According to the statement, “this partnership helps Yemenis access basic healthcare, including maternal health initiatives, child and maternal health, improving nutrition for children and pregnant women, strengthening the healthcare system in the country, increasing access to clean drinking water and sanitation facilities, and improving water and sanitation services delivery.”
In February, the USAID mentioned that areas under the control of the Houthi group are expected to experience a decline to emergency levels in acute food insecurity over the next four months.
