“Grundberg” in Moscow calls for a peaceful solution to the Yemeni crisis

On Friday, UN envoy to Yemen “Hans Grundberg” called for facilitating a peaceful solution to the Yemeni crisis, which is entering its ninth year without any signs of a solution on the near horizon.

A statement from the UN envoy’s office said that “Grundberg concluded a visit to Moscow today (Friday), where he held talks with senior Russian officials and met during his visit with Deputy Foreign Minister “Sergey Vershinin” and Deputy Foreign Minister and Russian Special Envoy for the Middle East, Mikhail Bogdanov.”

According to the statement, the UN envoy reviewed the latest efforts made to support the parties to reach an agreement on a roadmap and to implement their commitments to a ceasefire, measures to improve living conditions in Yemen, and resume a comprehensive political process under the auspices of the United Nations.

The discussions covered the latest developments in Yemen and the region ,in addition to their impact on the progress of peace efforts.

Grundberg, expressed his appreciation for the unity of the Security Council in supporting peace efforts in Yemen, and also stressed the importance of continued concerted support from the international community to facilitate a peaceful solution to the Yemeni crisis.

On Wednesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Russian Presidential Special Envoy to the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister “Mikhail Bogdanov” discussed with UN envoy Hans Grundberg achieving peace in Yemen and the Red Sea.

The statement added that “during the conversation, the two sides exchanged views in a comprehensive manner on the settlement of the military and political crisis in the Republic of Yemen, including the ongoing escalation of tension in the waters of the Red Sea.”

The statement indicated that “the two sides reiterated the importance of intensifying international efforts aimed at “establishing a sustainable Yemeni national dialogue under the auspices of the United Nations.”

The statement pointed out that “Grundberg was informed about the Russian side’s contacts with representatives of various Yemeni political forces, as well as regional partners, to promote the normalization of the situation in Yemen and its surroundings, including resolving the accumulated social, economic and humanitarian problems.
