The governor of Taiz meets with the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General Hans Grundberg

The UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, visited Taiz city  (southwest of Yemen) on Monday to discuss the province’s place in the announced road map to achieve peace in Yemen.

During the visit, the Special Envoy of the United Nations met with the governor of Taiz, Nabil Shamsan,. They discussed the humanitarian situation, the suffering experienced by the governorate, its place in the road map and achieving peace. The meeting was in the presence of the governorate’s agents and the director of the Police Department, General Mansour Al-Akhali.

At the beginning of the meeting, the governor expressed his happiness with the second visit of the UN envoy to Taiz, pointing out that the visit of “Grundberg” confirms the extent of interest and the distinguished position of Taiz governorate in light of the developments represented by choosing the governorate to be a model for the economic framework plan for transition to sustainable development and the active role of the United Nations in this field.

The Governor Shamsan mentioned the importance of opening the main roads to alleviate the increasing human suffering caused by developments in the Red Sea and it’s implications on doubling the cost of transportation of goods and commodities, in addition to the high transportation costs resulting from the blockade and the continued attacks and escalation on the fronts by the Houthis.

Shamsan praised the improvement witnessed by the governorate in many areas, the most important of which are security, service, water and sanitation and road repairing. He also stressed the importance of accommodating the humanitarian and developmental needs of the people in the governorate and alleviating their suffering.

For his part, the Special Envoy, expressed his happiness with the visit to the governorate and the tangible improvement he witnessed in repairing the roads, which are not a substitute for the main roads and work to open them.

Grundberg pointed out the importance of choosing Taiz as a model for implementing the transition plan for Sustainable Development and cooperation with the United Nations to succeed in this aspect.

The UN envoy expressed his concern about the escalation process in the Red Sea, which affects the situation in the province and the efforts exerted to achieve peace and build a road map.

He stressed the no return to military action, de-escalation in the Red Sea and work to overcome all challenges to reach a road map that includes readiness to engage in a political process to achieve the comprehensive peace sought by all Yemenis .

The UN envoy also met with the Taiz consultation team, representatives of the components and political parties, women, youth, and civil society organizations,  discussing with them a number of aspects related to the humanitarian situation and everyone’s vision to achieve comprehensive peace in the country.
