World Bank Approves $100 Million Grant for Yemen to Combat Malnutrition

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has approved a US$100 million grant for Yemen to finance a project aimed at improving nutrition and strengthening livelihoods for the country’s most vulnerable households.

In a statement, the World Bank said the grant is being provided through the International Development Association (IDA) and will fund the “Cash for Nutrition and Livelihoods Project.” The initiative will be implemented by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in partnership with Yemen’s Social Fund for Development (SFD).

The project is designed to support the country’s most vulnerable families, with a particular focus on mothers and children under the age of two, as part of broader efforts to reduce malnutrition and improve the livelihoods of populations most affected by Yemen’s prolonged humanitarian crisis.

According to the World Bank, the project is expected to benefit approximately 1.8 million people across 15 governorates that are among the areas most severely affected by malnutrition. Women are expected to account for at least 50 percent of all beneficiaries.

The World Bank emphasized that the project places special importance on the first 1,000 days of a child’s life, widely recognized as the most critical period for physical and cognitive development. The initiative aims to improve children’s long-term health and developmental outcomes by providing nutritional support during this crucial stage.
