Security Tensions in Aden: Widespread Calls to Uproot Militias and Hand City Security to Unified National Forces

Yemen Monitor / Monitoring Unit / Exclusive:

The terrorist bombing that targeted the convoy of Brigadier General Hamdi Shukri al-Subaihi, Commander of the Second Division of the Giants Forces, has reshuffled the security and political cards in the temporary capital, Aden. The attack has opened the door to a massive wave of questions and accusations directed at the existing security structure. As the General’s four-vehicle convoy passed the entrance of the ” Ja’awala ” road, a car bomb detonated in the heart of the motorcade, resulting in the martyrdom of several soldiers and the injury of others.

The physical survival of Brigadier General Shukri was not enough to calm the Yemeni public; instead, it served as the spark for widespread anger. Activists are now demanding a radical change in the leadership of the security apparatus and accountability for those involved, asserting that these leaderships require a comprehensive overhaul.

Journalist Yasser al-Hasani wrote: “There is no room for bickering; the flaw has become clear. The leadership of the security agencies in Aden needs an immediate, comprehensive, and radical change.”

Activist Moran al-Yafei stated: “The leadership of the security agencies in Aden must be changed urgently, and the state of emergency declared by the head of the Leadership Council must be activated.”

Saudi researcher Dr. Awad al-Qarni pointed fingers elsewhere, suggesting that “Abu Dhabi carried out a terrorist bombing in Aden,” adding: “If you want to know the perpetrator, ask who benefits.”

Other activists questioned the role of security agencies loyal to the UAE in the incident, noting that “the [STC] militias affiliated with the UAE are still in control of Aden.”

Activists called for replacing current security formations with unified national units under a centralized command, demanding an end to external loyalties that threaten the country’s security and stability.

Activist Nasser Ali Buqshan reported: “A military force belonging to the Security Belt raided commercial shops in the area of the explosion and confiscated surveillance cameras in an attempt to erase evidence.”

Meanwhile, activist Abdulrahman added: “Aden will never be safe as long as formations outside the state framework exist. The solution is clear: change them all and replace them with a single national unit.”

For his part, activist Nashwan al-Habshi stressed the necessity of “uprooting the militias affiliated with the UAE and replacing them with security forces whose loyalty is to the nation and the legitimate government.”

Activist Aboud al-Mahri called for a sovereign decision to hand the security file over to forces with genuine professional experience from the northern governorates, saying: “Protecting citizens is the state’s primary duty and is not a field for political tug-of-war.”

Activist Moayad al-Barah claimed that “preliminary indicators of the assassination attempt on Commander Hamdi Shukri point to the involvement of elements from the Security Belt formed by the UAE in Aden.”

Finally, activist Qassim Taher concluded: “As long as there is Emirati intervention driving chaos in Aden and the rest of the southern and western governorates, security will remain threatened, and stability will remain a distant dream.”
