ICRC Avoids Condemning Houthi Raid on Its Offices in Sana’a

Yemen Monitor / Sana’a / Special:

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) issued a cautious statement following reports that Houthi armed men had stormed its headquarters in the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, earlier this week.

In its first public comment, the ICRC refrained from directly condemning the raid or naming the perpetrators. Instead, it expressed “concern over recent developments” and affirmed its commitment to “dialogue with all relevant authorities to ensure the safety of its staff and the continuity of its humanitarian mission.”

The ICRC has not yet announced the suspension of its operations in Sana’a, but the incident is likely to intensify international scrutiny of the Houthis’ treatment of relief organizations and their adherence to International Humanitarian Law.

Sources had previously informed “Yemen Monitor” that heavily armed Houthi fighters forcibly stormed the ICRC compound on Wednesday, disrupting operations and detaining a number of employees, including foreign nationals, for questioning.

The ICRC did not confirm these details, but asserted that it is “closely monitoring the situation” and “engaging to clarify the circumstances.”

This incident comes amid a broader crackdown by the Houthi group on international organizations.
