U.S. Center Welcomes Release of Intisar Al-Hamadi, Condemns Arrest of Hanan Al-Shaibani in Sana’a

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The U.S. Center for Justice welcomed the release of Intisar Al-Hamadi after she spent nearly five years in the prisons of the Houthi group, during which she was subjected to severe violations including physical and psychological torture and enforced disappearance.

The Center emphasized that this positive step does not absolve the Houthis of legal responsibility for the violations committed against Al-Hamadi, considering that the victim still needs justice and redress for the harm she suffered.

In a related context, the Center strongly condemned the raid by armed Houthis on the apartment of UN employee Hanan Al-Shaibani in the Faj Attan area of Sana’a, and her arrest despite her critical health condition after recently suffering a miscarriage.

Local sources revealed that Al-Shaibani had been living in constant terror in recent weeks, especially after the Houthis arrested a number of her colleagues and her brother Rabee, who was released on October 11 after his health deteriorated.

The Center expressed deep concern over the continued policy of targeting women in areas under Houthi control, demanding the immediate release of Al-Shaibani and the provision of urgent medical care for her.

The statement stressed the necessity for the international community and the United Nations to take action to pressure the Houthis to release all female detainees, foremost among them activist Fatima Al-Arwali, who has been sentenced to death, and Hanan Al-Muntasser, who has been sentenced to 13 years.

The Center warned that the continuation of these violations represents a flagrant breach of international law, calling for holding those responsible for these crimes accountable and ensuring the rights of all detainees in Yemen.
