Aden Faces Total Power Shutdown as Electricity Corporation Appeals to Presidential Council for Intervention

Yemen Monitor / Aden / Newsroom:
Aden branch of the Public Electricity Corporation warned on Friday of a complete shutdown of power services and the plunging of the temporary capital into total darkness due to the depletion of diesel supplies.
In a statement monitored by Yemen Monitor, the corporation said that all diesel-powered power plants have stopped operating, leaving only the Presidential Power Station partially functioning and the Mansoura Station running with just three generators, which are expected to shut down by tomorrow.
The corporation appealed to the Presidential Leadership Council and the government to urgently intervene to provide fuel for power stations to prevent a total shutdown and the ensuing blackout in Aden.
It clarified that the solar power plant operates only during daylight hours, while power outages in Aden have reached ten hours of blackout for every two hours of power supply.
The temporary capital has suffered from a chronic electricity crisis for the past decade, with residents’ hardships worsening during the summer due to soaring temperatures. Aden’s power sector is considered one of the largest consumers of the state budget, mainly for fuel purchases.
The government had previously stated that Aden’s electricity expenditures amount to at least $55 million per month.
