Expanded Meeting in Taiz Approves Stricter Health Oversight and Closure of Non-Compliant Restaurants

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Local authorities in Taiz Governorate on Wednesday approved a series of new measures to strengthen health oversight of food products and to close restaurants and buffets that fail to comply with health regulations.

This came during an expanded meeting held at the governorate’s main office, chaired by First Deputy Governor Dr. Abdulqawi Al-Mekhlafi, with the participation of directors from the offices of Industry and Trade, the Cleaning and Improvement Fund, the Standards and Metrology Authority, the Environmental Protection Authority, as well as representatives from the Public Works Office and Taiz University.

The meeting stressed the importance of protecting consumers from any commercial fraud and ensuring access to safe and sound food. It also emphasized holding accountable negligent staff in environmental health departments at the district level. Additionally, the meeting discussed creating a joint mechanism to monitor food-processing facilities and verify their licenses, while requiring restaurants to install surveillance cameras inside kitchens.

The participants approved the formation of a joint committee to monitor the flow and storage of food products at entry points and oversee them through regular field campaigns. They also agreed to close any restaurants or facilities that violate health requirements, in addition to obligating them to properly dispose of their waste and remove roadside grills to preserve the city’s public appearance.
