Escalating Popular Protests in Hadhramaut Condemn Lack of Services and Demand Governor’s Removal

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
The wave of popular protests in Yemen’s Hadhramaut governorate continues for the fourth consecutive day, with demonstrations spreading from Mukalla to other cities such as Al-Qatn, Al-Raydah, Qusai’ar, and Tarim. This unprecedented escalation indicates a widening scope of public anger.
These cities have witnessed a comprehensive civil disobedience campaign, focusing on blocking roads and preventing the passage of large trucks. This has led to the closure of shops and the disruption of movement in markets and public facilities, with widespread participation from residents demanding improved living conditions and services.
Public outrage is centered on the deterioration of basic services, particularly the continuous power outages that have burdened citizens in an oil-rich region like Hadhramaut. This has driven them to the streets to demand the governor’s dismissal and an improvement in service levels.
Local sources report that cities in Wadi and coastal Hadhramaut, including Al-Qatn, Shibam, and Seiyun, have experienced an atmosphere of tension and anger amid ongoing civil disobedience. So far, there has been no significant official response from local authorities.
These popular movements come amid a clear inability to address the collapse of the electricity system and other services. This reflects the scale of the crisis in Hadhramaut despite its significant resources, increasing pressure on responsible authorities to find urgent solutions that meet the demands of the residents.
