The city of Mukalla in Hadramout governorate witnessed a wave of widespread public protests, as hundreds of citizens took to the streets to express their anger over deteriorating living conditions.
Protesters blocked several main roads in the city, while scenes of smoke and fires were seen in various areas as part of an escalation against the local authorities.
The protests were triggered by a continued power outage that entered its second consecutive day, sparking outrage among residents who are already suffering from harsh economic conditions.
Demonstrators believe the current crisis is being worsened by a sharp increase in fuel prices, coinciding with the steep collapse of the local currency.
The rapid depreciation of the Yemeni rial led to the closure of all currency exchange shops in the Al-Salam neighborhood, further intensifying public frustration.
Protesters blamed the worsening situation on what they described as “the corruption of Governor Mabkhout Mubarak bin Madi’s administration,” demanding his dismissal and accountability for what they see as a failure to manage the crisis.
These protests come amid a broader breakdown of essential services, with the city experiencing near-total collapse of the power grid alongside deepening economic hardship.
