Yemeni Rights Activist: Government Must Strengthen Its Presence and Improve Basic Services

Yemen Monitor – Newsroom:

Yemeni lawyer and human rights activist Huda Al-Sarari said that Yemen’s new government has recently shown noticeable momentum in the performance of several ministries through a faster pace of work and direct engagement with issues and needs affecting citizens in the liberated governorates.

Al-Sarari added in a press statement that this government presence, despite limited capabilities and scarce resources, reflects a growing awareness of the scale of responsibility placed on the state during the current phase, as well as the need to restore its role, authority, and presence alongside citizens amid difficult living conditions.

She pointed out that the government’s positive engagement is “a duty and responsibility before being an achievement,” but at the same time reveals a significant gap that still exists in the performance of service institutions, especially those connected to the daily essentials of citizens’ lives.

She stressed that some service sectors — particularly the electricity sector — are burdened by a heavy legacy accumulated over many years without radical solutions, to the point that they now require a genuine reconstruction process starting from scratch.

Al-Sarari called on the state leadership, represented by the Presidential Leadership Council, to provide serious support through emergency funding programs and by directing international and regional assistance toward rescuing the service and humanitarian situation, in a way that would help activate the role of ministries and institutions connected to citizens’ lives.

She also emphasized the importance of strengthening judicial and community oversight over funding sources and spending mechanisms to ensure that support reaches its rightful beneficiaries and achieves tangible results on the ground.

She said, “Today, citizens are not waiting for promises as much as they are waiting for real services that restore to them some degree of stability and dignity.”
