Yemeni President Orders Investigation Into Mukalla Events And Compensation For Victims
Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
The Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) in Yemen, Rashad Muhammad Al-Alimi, has ordered an immediate investigation into the recent violence witnessed in the city of Mukalla, the capital of Hadramawt Governorate. He directed authorities to refer the case to the Public Prosecution, compensate the victims, and provide care for the injured.
The directives followed a call made by Al-Alimi to the Governor of Hadramawt and PLC member, Salem Al-Khanbashi, to review developments in the situation. During the call, he received a preliminary briefing regarding the circumstances of the events and the security measures taken to contain tensions in the city.
According to official sources, Al-Alimi emphasized the necessity of conducting a transparent investigation to ensure accountability for those responsible and to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, affirming the state’s commitment to protecting civilians and upholding their rights.
These developments come after two people were killed and three others injured during unrest that accompanied a demonstration organized by supporters of the Transitional Council in Mukalla, despite prior warnings from authorities against organizing unlicensed events.
In a subsequent statement, local authorities in Hadramawt said that armed elements in civilian clothing opened fire on security forces during the protests, accusing unnamed parties of attempting to inflame the situation and push the city toward chaos. They also denied reports of a widespread deployment of emergency forces, describing them as “misleading.”
In this context, the Yemeni President affirmed that the right to peaceful demonstration is guaranteed but conditional on compliance with the law, warning against any acts that would disrupt security or target state institutions.
He also reaffirmed the government’s support for the local authorities in Hadramawt, calling on political forces to de-escalate and unify ranks at a time when the country is facing complex security and political challenges.
