Yemeni Government Approves General Budget After 7-Year Hiatus

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The new Yemeni government, headed by Dr. Shaya al-Zindani, approved the 2026 fiscal year budget today in Aden. This marks the first approved budget in seven years, following the last one passed in 2019.

The Supreme Budget Committee held a meeting dedicated to discussing and approving the 2026 draft budget. During the session, the committee reviewed the financial and economic challenges facing the state, as well as proposed reform measures aimed at restoring institutional regularity.

The state-run “Saba” news agency reported that the committee approved the budget based on the presentation provided by the Ministry of Finance and the policies and reforms associated with its implementation. This approval is subject to incorporating submitted feedback before presenting the draft to the Cabinet to complete the legal procedures required for final ratification.

The agency noted that the preparation of the draft budget reflects national priorities and aligns with available resources. This is intended to enable the government to fulfill its duties and most critical obligations, foremost among them the regular payment of salaries and wages for the administrative and military sectors, funding essential services, and supporting social protection programs.

In July of last year, former Prime Minister Salem bin Buraik issued a decision to form the Supreme Budget Committee, chaired by the Head of Government and the then-Minister of Finance, with membership consisting of revenue-generating ministries and financial sectors within the Ministry of Finance.
