Yemeni Presidency Mourns Ali Salem Al-Beidh and Announces Official Mourning and Flags at Half-Mast

The Presidency of the Republic announced, with profound sorrow and deep grief, to the struggling Yemeni people the death of the former Vice President of the Presidential Council and great national figure, Ali Salem Al-Beidh, who passed away today, Saturday, 17 January 2026, at the age of eighty-six, after a long career of struggle and political work in the service of the nation and its major causes.
In a statement of condolence, the Presidency affirmed that Yemen has lost, with the passing of Ali Salem Al-Beidh, one of the most prominent leaders and political symbols in its modern history, pointing to his early struggle within the ranks of the national movement and his significant contribution to achieving the project of statehood and independence, culminating in his pivotal role in shaping the achievement of Yemeni unity on 22 May 1990.
The statement praised the role played by the late leader as a sincere partner in realizing unity, embodying the aspirations of Yemenis to establish a single state based on national partnership and the rule of law—a path he remained committed to throughout the various stages of his political career.
The state leadership recalled the virtues and national stances of the deceased, emphasizing that his journey represents an important moment for reflection on the lessons of fair partnership, institutional work, and responsible dialogue, as well as the necessity of addressing national issues in a manner that preserves the dignity of Yemenis, safeguards their sacrifices, and lays the foundation for a more stable and just future.
The statement noted that the passing of Ali Salem Al-Beidh not only brings to mind bright chapters from the history of an honest national figure, but also opens the door to reviewing the course of the national movement and benefiting from the experiences of its leaders in building the state and strengthening national unity.
The Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, along with the Council’s members and the government, extended their deepest condolences and sincere sympathies to the family of the deceased, his comrades, and admirers, praying that Almighty God grant him vast mercy and admit him into His spacious gardens.
The Presidency also announced official mourning and the lowering of flags to half-mast for three days, and the opening of condolence registers at home and abroad, in appreciation of the deceased’s stature and national role.
