Amin Al-Sunini, head coach of Yemen’s U-23 national team, affirmed that the first phase of preparations held in the city of Marib for the upcoming AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers yielded important technical and physical benefits, marking a promising start toward full readiness.
In statements published by the Yemen Football Association, Al-Sunini said:
“By the grace of God, we successfully completed the first stage of preparations in Marib. It was an intensive period during which we focused on evaluating players, improving physical fitness, and enhancing team cohesion. Most players showed remarkable progress and strong responsiveness, with a noticeable improvement in physical condition—around 60%—as well as better tactical discipline.”
The national coach emphasized that the team had made significant strides in applying the core principles of their playing style, but stressed that there is still work to be done to reach peak readiness before the qualifiers begin.
Regarding the next phase, Al-Sunini described it as crucial, adding:
“Our goal in the coming stage is to reach maximum readiness both physically and tactically. We’ve submitted a comprehensive plan to the Football Association, which includes an international training camp and high-quality friendly matches to evaluate the players under pressure.”
He noted that the technical staff is focused on developing a balanced playing style based on ball possession, quick transitions, and high pressing, while also emphasizing mental preparation and collective discipline. He stressed that this can’t be achieved without strong friendly match experiences.
On the topic of expatriate players, Al-Sunini made it clear that the door is open to anyone with the abilities to benefit the team.
“We have clear criteria for selection. We don’t rely on names or recommendations, but on technical and physical evaluation and how well a player can integrate into the team system,” he stated.
He added that expatriate players are a valuable asset and have every right to represent their country. The team’s management is already in contact with several of them, and two players have been called up in recent weeks.
