A Yemeni observatory of rights on Saturday warned citizens of the danger of Houthi mines swept away by floods caused by the weather deterioration which is affecting different parts of the country.
The Yemeni Mine Observatory (non-governmental) urged all citizens to take precautions against mines and ammunition swept away by floods to inhabited areas and around displacement camps, and to report any strange objects to the competent authorities and raise awareness among children about the dangers of these objects to their safety.
It also called on travelers on main and secondary roads and alternative roads between Yemeni provinces to take the utmost caution against the danger of mines and shells swept away by floods to those roads and crossings.
It also warned farmers and those working in the grazing profession against dealing with strange objects swept away by floods to farms and cattle grazing areas.
During the past years, several casualties have been recorded in the provinces of “Marib, Al Jawf, Hajjah, Shabwa, Al Bayda, Al Dhale’, Lahj, Taiz and Hodeidah”, as a result of explosions of mines and other explosive devices in areas that were safe, as a result of the floods sweeping away these dangerous objects.
Yemen has recently witnessed floods and hurricanes due to climate change, the last of which was Cyclone Tieg, which hit the provinces of Al-Mahrah, Hadramout and Socotra in late October last year, causing material and human losses.
