Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
The Central Bank of Yemen has reaffirmed the importance of strictly enforcing the laws and regulations governing the financial sector to safeguard state resources, preserve monetary stability, and strengthen compliance with international standards.
The statement came during the closing meeting of the bank’s sixth Board of Directors session for 2026, chaired by Governor Ahmed Ghaleb. The board approved a package of measures aimed at improving institutional performance, advancing banking reforms, and strengthening governance, oversight, and risk management systems.
The board stressed the need for all relevant authorities to comply with the decisions of the Presidential Leadership Council, government directives, and regulations governing import financing, saying these measures would support economic recovery efforts and help maintain financial sector stability.
During the meeting, the board reviewed economic and financial developments during the first half of the year, examined the Central Bank’s 2025 annual report, and assessed the implementation of ongoing reform programs. It also discussed expanding financing instruments through the Sukuk Unit and reviewed the performance of the National Committee for the Regulation and Financing of Imports, which approved import financing requests exceeding $3 billion during the first five months of 2026.
The board praised the support provided by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the Yemeni government, particularly its budget support grant and assistance to the electricity sector. It described the aid as an important contributor to strengthening financial stability, improving basic public services, and ensuring the regular payment of salaries for state employees.
The board also commended the level of coordination between the Central Bank of Yemen and the Ministry of Finance, emphasizing that the integration of fiscal and monetary policies is a cornerstone of the government’s economic reform program and essential to improving the management of public resources.
