EU Welcomes Prisoner Exchange Agreement in Yemen and Calls on Houthis to Release Detainees

The European Union, on Saturday, welcomed the signing of a new prisoner exchange agreement in Yemen under United Nations auspices, providing for the release of more than 1,600 detainees, considering the step an “important humanitarian move” that would support peace efforts in the country.
The European Union said, in a statement, that the agreement “will contribute to reuniting families, building trust, and supporting the UN-led peace efforts in Yemen.”
The EU called on the Yemeni parties to “work in good faith to secure further releases,” emphasizing the importance of continuing humanitarian measures that alleviate the suffering of Yemenis.
It also called on the Houthis to “immediately release all detained UN, international NGO, and diplomatic mission personnel.”
The agreement comes within the framework of UN endeavors aimed at advancing the peace process in Yemen, coinciding with international and regional efforts to end the years-long conflict.
