Al-Alimi Meets Leaders of Syria, Latvia, and Greece in New York to Discuss Peace and Maritime Security

Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, Chairman of Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), held a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York with Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The talks addressed developments in Yemen and the region, ways to strengthen bilateral relations, and coordination on issues of mutual concern. Al-Alimi emphasized Yemen’s commitment to building effective partnerships with various countries to support peace efforts, deter threats from the Iran-backed Houthi militias, secure international navigation, and confront the consequences of war while addressing the humanitarian crisis.
The PLC Chairman praised the historic ties with Syria, welcomed the reopening of the Yemeni embassy in Damascus, and reaffirmed Yemen’s support for Syria’s unity and sovereignty. He also congratulated Latvia on its election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2026–2027, stressing the importance of its role in supporting peace and pressuring the Houthis. Additionally, he commended Greece’s active positions in the UN sanctions committee, its chairmanship of the working group on children and armed conflict, and its role in strengthening security in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb.
For their part, the three leaders affirmed their countries’ support for the PLC, the government, and the Yemeni people in their aspirations for peace, stability, and development.
