Flash Floods Demolish Homes of Displaced People in Hajjah, Northwestern Yemen

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Over the past two days, Yemen’s Hajjah governorate has experienced a humanitarian crisis as heavy rains and flash floods swept through several districts, destroying homes and displacing hundreds of families. Fears are growing that the crisis will worsen due to a lack of immediate solutions and preventive measures.

Local sources confirmed the deaths of three children and the injury of their father, Yahya Abdullah Hajaji, after their home in the village of Al-Khadra in the K’aidinah district collapsed due to heavy rains.

The Abs district and several neighboring areas also saw destructive floods and heavy rains, causing widespread damage, particularly to homes built from simple, non-resilient materials.

Journalist Issa Al-Rajhi posted photos showing the extent of the damage to the homes of displaced people, commenting, “Abs is devastated… The rains and floods have destroyed hundreds of homes for the displaced.”

Local sources reported that the floods destroyed hundreds of homes in Abs, Al-Rubou’, Shafr, and Bani Hassan, turning the shelters of displaced people into rubble and leaving thousands of families without shelter, facing difficult humanitarian conditions in the open.

Activists on social media have also shared photos documenting the destruction, highlighting the urgent need for immediate intervention to rescue affected families and provide humanitarian aid.
