U.S. Calls for End to UN Mission Supporting Hudaidah Agreement

Yemen Monitor/ New York/ Exclusive:

On Wednesday, the U.S. called on the Security Council to end the mission of the United Nations Mission to support the Hudaidah Agreement (UNMHA), which was formed to oversee the implementation of the Stockholm Agreement between the Houthis and the internationally recognized Yemeni government.

Dorothy Shea, the acting US Permanent Representative to the Security Council, stated that the rapid developments on the ground, especially in Hudaidah Governorate, have long surpassed the mission’s limited mandate and tasks.

She added: “We believe it is time to end this mission.”

Shea also said, “The US remains committed to depriving the Houthis of the resources that fund their activities and terrorist network.”

The United Nations Mission to support the Hudaidah Agreement (UNMHA) is a civilian monitoring mission established by the United Nations in Yemen. It was formed under Security Council Resolution 2452 (2019) to support the implementation of the “Hudaidah Agreement” reached in Stockholm, Sweden, in December 2018, between the Yemeni government and the Houthis.

The mission failed to achieve its objectives. While it effectively halted the government’s campaign to reclaim Hudaidah from the Houthis, it was unable to compel the Houthis to withdraw their forces from Hudaidah city and its ports (Hudaidah, Salif, Ras Isa).
