Grundberg: Agreement to Release Detainees Proves Dialogue Can Alleviate Yemeni Suffering

Yemen Monitor/ Newsroom:

The UN Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, stated that the agreement to release more than 1,600 conflict-related detainees in Yemen serves as clear evidence of what ongoing negotiations between Yemeni parties can achieve.

In a statement issued Thursday, Grundberg added that the agreement “proves that when the parties choose to engage in dialogue, they can achieve priorities that alleviate burdens on Yemeni families and build trust for the broader peace process.”

The UN Envoy described the agreement as a “moment of deep relief” for thousands of Yemenis who have waited for the return of their loved ones, praising what he called the steadfast and courageous calls from the families of the detainees that contributed to reaching this outcome.

He also commended the two parties for engaging “in good faith” during the negotiations, which lasted 14 weeks in the Jordanian capital, Amman, despite what he described as extraordinary regional complications. He called for building upon the results of the agreement and implementing additional releases, including through unilateral initiatives.
