UN: Number of African Migrants Arriving in Yemen Declines During April

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The United Nations International Organization for Migration said that the number of African migrants arriving in Yemen declined during April by 13 percent compared to the previous month.

In a recent report reviewed by “Yemen Monitor,” the organization stated that it recorded the arrival of 14,834 African migrants to Yemeni territory during April, most of them Ethiopian nationals, via the coasts of the governorates of Abyan, Shabwa, Lahj, and Al-Mahrah.

The report added that the number of arrivals during March was 17,027 migrants, reflecting a noticeable decrease in migration flows during April.

UN and local reports indicate that irregular migrants continue to arrive in Yemen via dangerous sea journeys managed by smuggling networks operating between the Horn of Africa countries and the Yemeni coasts.

Yemen is seen as a major transit point for migrants coming from Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa on their way to the Gulf states, particularly Saudi Arabia and Oman, hoping to obtain job opportunities and improve their living conditions.
