Saudi Arabia and Britain Fund $10 Million In Food Support for Yemen

Yemen Monitor/Reuters:

On Wednesday, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre signed an agreement with the World Food Programme to provide $10 million, co-funded by Saudi Arabia and Britain, to support food security in five Yemeni governorates.

The programme said in a statement that the project targets the governorates of Aden, Hadramawt, Al-Mahrah, Al-Dhale’e, and Lahj by providing conditional cash transfers and supporting activities that help the most vulnerable groups meet their food needs and reduce their dependence on humanitarian aid.

It added that the project includes rehabilitating productive infrastructure, implementing vocational training and skill development programs, and building the capacity of local authorities to manage and sustain community assets.

The new funding comes amid warnings from the United Nations that funding shortages threaten to worsen hunger in Yemen. Last month, the FAO, the World Food Programme, and UNICEF stated that around five million people, or 47 percent of the population in areas under the control of the internationally recognized government, suffer from acute food insecurity at a crisis level or worse, including 1.4 million people in the emergency phase.
