MASAM: Landmines Dismantled Near Civilian Homes in Hayran, North of Hajjah, Averting an Imminent Catastrophe

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

MASAM demining project in Yemen reported that its Team 40 successfully averted a looming catastrophe for civilians in the village of Bani Khuri, Hayran District, north of Hajjah Governorate, after discovering a minefield located just meters from residential homes.

The project stated that the report came via field media from the village sheikh, Ali Khouri, who alerted them to a minefield situated only about 100 meters from the houses, prompting an urgent response from MASAM teams operating in the Midi sector.

Team 40 immediately responded, heading to the site and beginning survey and clearance operations as part of its ongoing efforts to protect civilian lives from the dangers of landmines.

Team leader Engineer Al-Baraa Al-Rouhani said that within the first few hours of this morning, the team managed to dismantle two anti-personnel mines, while continuing to deal with three anti-tank mines—one of which is rigged with a booby-trap decoy that poses a direct threat to demining personnel.

Al-Rouhani warned residents to stay away from the site due to the hazardous situation, emphasizing that work will continue until the area is fully secured, ensuring the protection of the population and paving the way for the safe return of their daily activities.
