Yemen Signs Agreement to Recover Two Artifacts from Germany

Yemen Monitor/ Newsroom:

The Republic of Yemen signed an agreement on Tuesday with the Winckelmann Association and Museum in Germany, providing for the return of ownership of two Yemeni artifacts within the collection of the late German diplomat Werner Daum, which are currently kept in the museum of the city of Stendal.

The Yemeni side was represented at the signing by Yemeni Ambassador to Germany, Loai Al-Eryani, along with Mohammed Atbosh, a member of the International Liaison Unit at the Public Prosecution in charge of following up on smuggled antiquities cases. The German side was represented by the Director of the Winckelmann Museum, Max Kunze.

The agreement states that the two artifacts will remain in the German museum for conservation, display, and preservation purposes, while securing the right of the Republic of Yemen to recover and transfer them back to the country in the future through diplomatic channels and in coordination between the two sides.

This step comes within the framework of Yemeni efforts aimed at recovering cultural property and antiquities located outside the country and preserving the national historical heritage.
