Yemeni Presidential Council Orders Military Campaign to Support Abyan Authorities in Securing Coastline and Removing Illegal Levies

Yemen Monitor | Newsroom:

Member of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), Abdulrahman al-Mahrami, issued directives on Monday to form a joint military and security campaign to support local authorities in Abyan Governorate (southern Yemen). The operation aims to secure the coastal strip in the Ahwar district and dismantle all illegal checkpoints collecting unauthorized levies.

According to official memos circulated by sources close to al-Mahrami, the directives were issued in response to a formal request from the Governor of Abyan, Dr. Mukhtar al-Rabash. The order mandates the formation of a joint task force led by Colonel Hussein al-Hayd to remove “taxation” points and secure the strategic coastline.

The directives included instructions to all military and security units stationed in the governorate, including the First Infantry and Support Axis, units of the Fourth Military Region, the Giants Brigades, and units affiliated with the Ministry of Interior.

Al-Mahrami emphasized that implementation must begin immediately, starting today, May 11, 2026. He instructed the campaign leaders to submit urgent periodic reports on field progress to ensure the restoration of state authority and the protection of travelers and commercial movement.

This move follows a surge in complaints regarding the proliferation of unauthorized checkpoints and highway robberies that have burdened citizens and truck drivers. The campaign is seen as a critical step toward enhancing stability and reinforcing security along one of the country’s most vital coastal corridors.
