Al-Alimi: Recent Assassinations Aim to Undermine International Partners’ Confidence in The Yemeni Government

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The head of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, said on Sunday that the assassinations witnessed in government-controlled areas are intended to shake the confidence of international partners in the security of the liberated provinces.

During a meeting in Riyadh with the British Ambassador to Yemen, Abda Sharif, he discussed bilateral relations between the two friendly countries, as well as British humanitarian and developmental interventions in various fields. He appreciated the United Kingdom’s supportive stance toward the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government, and London’s ongoing commitment to supporting stability, economic and humanitarian reforms in Yemen.

The meeting also addressed the recent wave of assassinations targeting civilians in government-controlled areas, describing them as attempts to undermine international partners’ confidence in the security of the liberated provinces.

Al-Alimi stressed the need to move from a policy of “containing repercussions” to “addressing root causes,” calling for closing the file of armed groups and Tehran’s proxies.

He warned against a policy of containment toward groups funded by Iran to undermine the nation-state, blackmail the global economy, and threaten international waterways.

Al-Alimi affirmed the Presidential Council’s support for de-escalation efforts but linked achieving peace to “addressing sources of danger from land and sea” and ending the threat of cross-border factions.

The United Kingdom plays a pivotal role in the Yemen file as the “penholder” at the UN Security Council, responsible for drafting resolutions related to Yemen. It is also a prominent economic and humanitarian partner of the internationally recognized government.
