IOM: Over 4.5 Million Children Out of School in Yemen

Yemen Monitor/ Newsroom:
The United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced on Thursday that more than 4.5 million children are out of school in Yemen, amid the ongoing repercussions of the humanitarian crisis facing the country.
In a statement, the organization said it had launched a project to rehabilitate and expand 12 schools in the governorates of Aden, Lahj, and Taiz, aiming to improve access to education in communities affected by crisis and displacement.
It added that the project is expected to directly benefit more than 18,000 students and teachers by providing a safer and more inclusive educational environment.
The statement explained that the handover ceremonies for the implementation sites began at the Qataban School in the Ma’alla district of the interim capital, Aden, in the presence of representatives from the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), the IOM, the Ministry of Education, local authorities, and education offices in Aden and Taiz.
It noted that the humanitarian crisis in Yemen has significantly weakened public services and social protection networks since the outbreak of the conflict.
The report stated that approximately 2,800 schools have been destroyed, partially damaged, or used for non-educational purposes, which has restricted access to safe educational facilities.
The organization warned that this situation has resulted in over 4.5 million children being out of school in Yemen, including approximately 760,000 children in the governorates of Aden, Lahj, and Taiz alone.
It emphasized that pressure continues to mount on the already overburdened education services in those provinces.
