Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council member and Hadramawt Governor Salem Ahmed Al-Khanbashi has called on the World Food Programme (WFP) to expand its humanitarian operations across all districts of Hadramawt Governorate to address the continuing deterioration of living conditions and strengthen food security.
The appeal came during a meeting on Saturday in the city of Mukalla with a WFP delegation led by Deputy Country Director Samantha Chatteraj, in the presence of the WFP’s Mukalla Office Director, Shaker Al-Lawzi. The two sides discussed the current level of humanitarian assistance and ways to enhance interventions in line with growing humanitarian needs.
Al-Khanbashi stressed that the current economic and humanitarian conditions require intensified relief efforts, emphasizing the importance of expanding the programme’s activities to cover all areas of Hadramawt. He also called for greater attention to school feeding programmes and stronger partnerships with international organizations and the private sector to support the humanitarian response.
He reaffirmed the local authority’s readiness to provide all necessary facilitation to enable the WFP to carry out its mission, while praising the decision to relocate the World Food Programme’s office to Yemen’s temporary capital, Aden. He said the move would improve field coordination, enhance the effectiveness of humanitarian operations, and reduce the security risks facing international organizations.
For its part, the World Food Programme delegation reviewed the agency’s key activities in Yemen and the findings of its field visits to several districts in Hadramawt. The delegation also outlined the challenges facing the implementation of its humanitarian programmes and reaffirmed its commitment to continued coordination with the Yemeni government and local authorities to strengthen relief efforts and reach the most vulnerable populations.
