MASAM Project: 6,786 Mines and War Remnants Cleared in Yemen During June 2026

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

MASAM project for landmine clearance in Yemen continued its humanitarian efforts to reduce the risks of mines and war remnants, announcing the clearance of 6,786 mines and explosive items from various Yemeni regions during the month of June 2026.

According to the project’s latest operational statistics, the materials handled included 186 anti-personnel mines, 442 anti-tank mines, 6,072 pieces of unexploded ordnance, in addition to 86 improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Field teams also managed to clear approximately 1,364,510 square meters of land, making it safe for civilian use.

The project explained that the clearance operations were distributed across a number of governorates, including Aden, Al-Hudaidah, Hadramawt, Hajjah, Lahj, Marib, Shabwah, Taiz, and Al-Dhale’a, in areas that still suffer from widespread mine contamination, which poses a continuous threat to civilian lives and hinders agricultural activities and movement.

It noted that the bulk of the materials disposed of during the past period consisted of unexploded ordnance, reflecting the persistent danger of war remnants in areas that witnessed conflicts, where these materials are often hidden in agricultural lands, residential areas, and along roads used by civilians on a daily basis.

In a related context, the project’s first special team in the temporary capital, Aden, carried out clearance operations inside two government warehouses at the request of local authorities, where anti-tank mines, unexploded ordnance, and mortar shells—some of which had been converted into improvised explosive devices—were inventoried. The operation is still ongoing in preparation for transporting the materials to safe storage sites for disposal in accordance with international standards.

The second special team operating on the West Coast also recovered an additional 282 pieces of unexploded ordnance, which were transferred to safe sites for subsequent disposal.

Since the start of its operations in mid-2018, the “Masam” project announced that it has managed to remove 571,125 explosive threats and clear more than 82 million square meters of land, contributing to fostering the return of normal life, supporting livelihoods, and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid across various parts of Yemen.

The project emphasized the continuation of its mine clearance activities in accordance with international humanitarian mine action standards, and in a manner that reduces the impact of these remnants on the affected communities.
