Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
The Yemeni Coast Guard announced that it is investigating a report regarding the hijacking of the oil tanker M/T EUREKA off the coast of Shabwah Governorate, according to an initial clarifying statement issued today, Saturday, May 2, 2026.
The statement noted that preliminary information indicates the tanker was subjected to an armed robbery by unidentified elements, who boarded and seized control of the vessel before heading toward the Gulf of Aden in the direction of the Somali coast.
The Coast Guard explained that upon receiving the report, it immediately initiated operational procedures by deploying two maritime patrol boats from Aden and a small patrol boat from Shabwah. These efforts are part of search and tracking operations to determine the tanker’s location, despite limited capabilities and the exceptional circumstances currently facing the country.
The statement further indicated that coordination with international partners and relevant authorities present in the Gulf of Aden resulted in identifying the tanker’s location. It confirmed that efforts are ongoing to monitor the vessel and take the necessary measures to recover it and ensure the safety of its crew.
The Coast Guard urged the public to follow subsequent updates via its official platforms as field monitoring of the incident continues.
