US Judge Suspends Termination of TPS for Thousands of Yemenis in the United States

Yemen Monitor / Reuters:

U.S. Federal Judge Dale Ho, in a Manhattan court in New York, issued a judicial ruling to halt the implementation of a plan aimed at ending the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 3,000 Yemeni citizens residing on U.S. soil.

The decision temporarily obstructs a government move that would have ended the legal protections allowing Yemenis to live and work legally, pending a full ruling on the case. This comes amid fears that the termination would lead to the deportation of those affected, the loss of their jobs, and the destabilization of their families.

For its part, the American Center for Justice welcomed the court’s decision, which immediately halted the Trump administration’s decision to end TPS for Yemeni citizens in the US. The center considered this step a temporary victory for the human and legal rights of thousands of Yemeni families.

The administration of President Donald Trump had previously ended the “Temporary Protection” granted to Yemeni refugees in the US, which had been in effect for 10 years. This status allowed more than 1,400 Yemeni citizens to live and work in the U.S., while the country continues to warn its own citizens against traveling to Yemen for security reasons.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) allows a limited number of people to live and work in the United States if it is deemed that they would be in danger upon returning to their home country due to armed conflict, environmental disasters, or other extraordinary conditions.

Yemen, one of the poorest countries in the world, was included in the TPS program in 2015 due to the ongoing armed conflict within its territory.
