Yemeni Government Calls for International Support for Reconstruction

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Yemeni Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Waed Badhib, met today in the Jordanian capital, Amman, with Economic Adviser Dirk Jan and the Head of the Political Affairs Section at the UN Envoy’s Office to Yemen, Roxana Yelena Bazargan, to discuss economic developments and UN efforts to bring peace.

Minister Badhib praised the role of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy and his efforts to stop the war and achieve a just and sustainable peace, affirming the Yemeni government’s support for these efforts.

The minister pointed out that “the Houthi militia continues to obstruct the peace process and implement foreign agendas,” highlighting the impact of their attacks on commercial vessels and the threat they pose to navigation in the Red Sea, which has caused heavy losses to the national economy. Among these losses is the deprivation of more than 65% of the state’s oil revenues since their attacks on ships began in 2022.

He also referred to the Houthis’ takeover of vast economic networks in the oil, banking, and trade sectors, which they use to fund their military activities, in addition to redirecting humanitarian aid and preventing it from reaching those in need.

Minister Badhib stressed the importance of the telecommunications and information technology sector as a strategic pillar for revitalizing the national economy and fostering an innovation-friendly environment. He called for effective partnerships with the international community to support investment in digital infrastructure and train national talent in a way that contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

The minister also reviewed the government’s urgent priority plan for 2025–2026, aimed at strengthening financial sustainability, ensuring banking stability, curbing inflation, encouraging private investment, and mobilizing resources for recovery and reconstruction.

He urged the international community to provide the necessary support for the reconstruction phase, in order to meet the aspirations of the Yemeni people and help restore security and economic stability.

For his part, the UN official affirmed the international community’s commitment to standing by Yemen during this stage, stressing the importance of partnership with the legitimate government and donor countries to enhance opportunities for economic recovery and create the conditions for lasting peace.
